Leading Through Challenging Circumstances, Day 13

The reward for faithfulness. Read Daniel 2:48-49.

As we close out this incredible chapter, we see a very interesting statement, that if we’re not careful, we’ll misunderstand. Having worked for much of my life in the business world, I’ve seen people get promotions and move through the ranks all because they were friends with people or networked with the right people. We see all the time that favors seem to be passed around and bestowed on those just because they are friends of the person in charge. At first glance, that almost seems like what is happening here.

The king is so overjoyed and impressed with Daniel and his God that he offers Daniel a high position of importance and prestige. Daniel does accept that position, but then we see this verse where he makes room to appoint his three friends into high positions as well. It can be easy to just assume that his intent would have been the same as so many people’s intents today. However, think back to this story. These three individuals played a substantial role in the success. David went to the three of them and asked them to pray with him.

If we downplay the power of prayer, then we are missing out on the greatest weapon in our spiritual armor. These three friends fought the battle through prayer and as a result, Daniel understood just how great their presence and sacrifice was. Daniel knew that he would need people who would go to the Lord in prayer on behalf of all of them. Daniel wanted to ensure that they were rewarded for the high role and position they played in Daniel receiving the message from the Lord.

Do we recognize the power of prayer? Do we see how strong people are who are backing us up in prayer? Are we thankful and respectful of all that these people can accomplish simply by getting on their knees? Daniel is thankful and grateful to them for all they did for him and is ensuring that everyone else gets the benefit of their strength in prayer as well. Who do we need to thank and recognize for their tremendous time spent in prayer for us?
