Life and Love, Day 8

It matters what we love. Read 1 John 2:15-17.

As we continue reading, John has just been explaining why he was writing the book to the people. Now he wants to explain the point of love. As a man who is so focused on the love of God and the love of Jesus, it may seem interesting to think about the fact that there are things that we should not love.

John wants to be very clear, love is not meant for everything. Love is only meant for God. We are to demonstrate and display to God the love that we have for him. We are not to love the world or anything in the world,. As creatures who are so motivated by our senses, it is easy to be distracted by what we see and hear and touch. Often, those seem more real to us than the eternal things of God, yet God reminds us that we are not to love anything in this world.

We are not to love the stuff of the world. We are not to love the positions of this world. We’re not even to love the people of this world more than we love God. We are to love God first and foremost. Are we focused on loving Him today?
