Life and Love, Day 9

Spot the fake. Read 1 John 2:18-27.
Now that John has explained the importance of loving the things of God and not loving the things of the world, we are responsible for spotting the fakes. The early church that John was writing to was experiencing people who were claiming to be of Christ, but then teaching things that were not even close to in line with the gospel message.
John reminds the people that part of demonstrating the love of Christ is understanding when people are not of the love of Christ. We have to be able to identify those who are teaching things that that are not of God. We have to be able to spot the fakes. The world is full of people who have taken God’s word and twisted it, or added to it to make their own theology.
The gospel message is incredibly simple. Yet, that sometimes makes it difficult for people to believe and so they are looking for extra things to add-on or things that they think they are supposed to do in order to be made right with God. Anyone who teaches that we have to do anything to earn a relationship with God is missing the key point of the gospel message: Christ’s death on the cross and the mercy and forgiveness that is provided is a free gift.
We need to be able to spot those people who are not sharing that message and help them understand where their mistakes are, if possible. We may be in disagreement about some minor details that are not covered in the Gospels, but when it comes to the message of Jesus Christ, who he is and what he came to do, we cannot be divided. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Jesus Christ is God. As we know Jesus Christ, we will know the Father.
