What Makes A Good Leader, Day 2

The List of Dos and Dont’s. Read Titus 1:6-9.

I’ve worked in the field of Human Resources for many years and recruiting and hiring has been a significant part of my responsibilities over the years. I’ve seen many different approaches to hiring people through the years. One of the key approaches that people tend to favor is more of the checklist style approach. We have a list of qualities and characteristics that we want (and don’t want) in a prospective candidate. Then, the application and interview processes are designed around that list in order to help clarify which candidate is going to fulfill more of that list.

Here, we see Paul very clearly spelling out what Titus should be looking for in a leader. As we read through verses 6-8, we see a very long list indeed! As we come to verse 9, we see that is essentially the summary of the entire list. A Godly leader should be someone who is holding fast to the faithful Word of Christ in their own life. That will enable them to encourage others to do the same. It will also enable them to recognize and speak against people who are not holding to the truth.

As anyone who has ever tried to hire someone knows, finding a person who checks every box of a list of criteria is exhaustingly challenging. Paul summarizes the list in this verse, saying that that a true Godly leader holds on to God’s Word and works to live it out daily. That person seeks to be an encouragement to others to follow Christ and that person will also stand up for what is right, even if others don’t agree. In the end, if someone is doing those three things, they will not have any issue with the list of dos and don’ts in the previous 3 verses.

Are we a Christian leader? Do we hold fast to God’s Word and Teaching, do we encourage others to follow God and do we speak up against those who oppose God’s Word?
