Christian Devotional – January 26, 2017
Today we are going to start reading through Ezekiel. Take some time and read through the first chapter. As we look at the amazing and, quite frankly, indescribable vision that Ezekiel had, we see the amazing and awesomeness of God depicted here. Even though I can’t wrap my mind around exactly what Ezekiel saw, I am amazed at the sense of power that is depicted. Also, I get a great feeling of fluidity and harmony and how everythning works together. The other thing that strikes me in this passage is that this amazing description of God says over and over again that He is always moving forward, even though He…

Read Nahum chapter 1 VERSE: Nahum 1:7–The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him. TRUTH: In the midst of this chapter full of pronouncements of destruction and judgment for wrong, this statement is made. It contrasts so sharply with the idea that if we trust God, He will reveal His true nature to us, He will care for us, He will be a refuge for us, and he is good. On the other hand, it we don’t trust God or follow God, the He will reveal His trust nature to us. He is good and as a result, He must…

Read James chapter 2 VERSE: James 2:19–You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder. TRUTH: Our belief in God is a good thing, but we must remember that it is more than just believe that God is real and that He is powerful. The demons know those facts. They just how real and how powerful God is. Yet, they are not saved. Our knowledge of God and Jesus isn’t enough. We must desire that He take control of our life. We must put Him first. As we do that, then we will see His power in our life daily and we will experience His…

Read James chapter 1 VERSE: James 1:16-17–Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. TRUTH: We should never get confused about where the good things in our life come from. God is good and He is the author of all good things. He doesn’t change and so the good things that He is able to bring about in others lives, He is able to bring about in our lives. We can often get deceived into thinking that we “worked” to provide these good things. Or, sometimes…

Read 1 Samuel chapter 28 VERSE: 1 Samuel 28:15b–“I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.” TRUTH: Saul had been disobedient and had rejected God. Because of his sin, God had rejected him. Now, instead of repenting to turn to God, Saul is resorting to the sin of witchcraft to try and find answers. Often when we want answers from God, we want them on our terms. We try to dictate to God when and how…

Read Psalm chapter 116 VERSE: Psalm 116:12–What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me? TRUTH: Have we ever thought much about that question? What will we give back to God that would ever begin to compare with all He has done for us? He created us. He works with us and protects and defends us. He made the way of salvation for us through His Son. We owe Him everything and that is exactly what He deserves from us…everything! RESPONSE: Father, You give me everything and in return, I give You everything. All that I am for all that You are.

Read Psalm chapter 113 VERSE: Psalm 1135–Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high? TRUTH: The answer is no one. No one is like the Lord most high. Others try to lie and convince us that they have as much power or influence. We even try to convince ourselves sometimes that we each have the same power and might that the Lord does, but we don’t. Not even close. God is over everything and not just because He is powerful, but because He is the Creator of everything. He crafted the world with His words. Do we give Him the respect that is due?…

Read Matthew chapter 22 VERSE: Matthew 22:37–Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'” TRUTH: Jesus gave this answer to people who were trying to test him. These were the same people who would eventually have him killed. Yet He was explaining to them the importance of showing love to God. He wanted to make sure they understood that more than they quest for power, more than their quest for recognition, and even more than their quest for worldly things, God wanted them. He wants our hearts and our minds and our souls. God made us and…

Read Hosea chapter 10 VERSE: Hosea 10:12–Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break p your unplowed ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you. TRUTH: In the midst of an entire chapter about the evil consequences of their sin, God gives Israel this reminder. We reap what we sow. God tells us to sow righteousness. He promises that if we will sow righteousness then we will reap a harvest of unfailing love that will help us to reach even more ground with righteousness and unfailing love. What are we sowing today? We will reap what…

Read 1 John chapter 5 VERSE: 1 John 5:20-21–We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. TRUTH: God is the true God. Jesus Christ is the true redeemer. Anything else that we chase after is an idol. Do we keep ourselves from idols? Will we follow Him and trust Him to be who He says He is or not. Ultimately we are choosing Him or we…
