    Devotional – January 5, 2012

VERSE: Luke 13:5–I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. TRUTH: Often we think there is a scale by which we measure the wrongs that we do. “Well that was worse than Jane’s, but not nearly as bad as what Sarah did.” Sin does not work that way. There is not a scale, there is only a yes or no question. “Have we done anything wrong?” We all have to answer that with a yes, so we all need to come to Jesus Christ for forgiveness or we will perish. Jesus uses this opportunity to make this very clear to His audience. RESPONSE: Lord, as I…

VERSE: Luke 12:31–But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. TRUTH: How often do we find what we are looking for? The answer is that it depends on what we are seeking. We are told to seek after God’s kingdom. The result is that we will find it, plus many other things as well. What things? In the surrounding verses, Jesus touches on having peace from worry, no fear, and physical needs met. If we are seeking God and His kingdom, then He will give us, not necessarily riches or wealth, but peace and security in Him.RESPONSE: Lord, I only want to seek after You. Lord,…

VERSE: Luke 11:3–Give us each day our daily bread. TRUTH: In the era of refrigeration, along with McDonalds and Walmart, it can be difficult to truly comprehend what it means to pray asking for our daily bread. Do we trust in God to provide for us? Or do we trust in our own planning and storing. As we look around today, what would we have if God did not povide for us? We must be careful not to lose sight of God’s provision for us.RESPONSE: Lord, please provide for me my daily bread. It is only by Your grace that I am able to take my next breath, let alone…

Book Review – The Prosperity Gospel Exposed, by Michael Fortner

I am going to get back to doing our weekly book reviews on Mondays. I love to read and I want to help spread the word about some of the great books I’ve read recently. I received a copy of The Prosperity Gospel Exposed: and Other False Doctrines from Michael Fortner who asked if I’d be willing to read and write an honest review. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I sat down to read. What I found was a well thought out and researched review of the main principles of the Prosperity gospel that is preached by so many big-name preachers today, along with solid Biblical facts…

VERSE: Luke 10:41–But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things.” TRUTH: Jesus stops in to see Mary and Martha. Mary sits to listen to Jesus while Martha works to prepare things. However, Martha becomes angry and frustrated and asks Jesus to tell her sister to come help. Jesus tells her how she is too busy being distracted and worried. He goes on to tell her that only one thing is important: Him. Do we get distracted and worried about other things besides Jesus? We are to focus on Jesus, not on all the distractions. RESPONSE: Lord, there are so…

VERSE: Luke 9:20–And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” TRUTH: We’ve heard many people expound on who they believe Jesus is. Ultimately, it comes down to each person to answer that question for themselves. Granted, the answers do not change to truth of who He really is, but the do determine how each of us will relate to Him. God asks each one of us to answer the question, “Who do you say that I am?” As we begin a new year, who do you say Jesus is? Will we live out our answer this year? RESPONSE: Lord,…

    Devotional – December 31, 2011

VERSE: Luke 8:25a–And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” TRUTH: Jesus had just calmed the storm and turned to look at his disciples, who show both fear and amazement on their faces. He asks them, “Where is your faith?” Many times as I’ve gone through trying circumstances, I’ve heard Him whisper to me, “Where is your faith?” I’ve had to answer honestly that I don’t know. It’s not a condemnation by Him, but a reminder that I need to be looking for it, guarding it, because circumstances will come that will cause me to lose sight of my faith. Where is your faith? RESPONSE: Lord, my faith is…

VERSE: Luke 7:50– And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” TRUTH: This woman had just brought herself to Jesus. She was not rich or well known, yet her only desire was to show Him how much she loved Him. How do we show our love for Jesus? Because she demonstrates her love for Him, He saved her and gave her peace. RESPONSE: Father, I do not know where I’d be without You. I pray I would demonstrate my love for You today with no thought of what others might think, just like this woman.

VERSE: Luke 6:32–If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. TRUTH: It’s easy to love people who love us back. However, God calls us to love everyone. This includes the people who hurt us, irritate us, anger us, or even ignore us. How can we possibly do this? Not in our own strength, but only by surrendering to God and allowing Him to work through us to love them. Do we allow God to love everyone through us? RESPONSE: Lord, I pray I will get out of Your way today so You can love people through me.…

VERSE: Luke 5:16–But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray. TRUTH: Time is an interesting commodity. We are allotted exactly the same amount as everyone else, every day. Often we wish for more, yet if we ever find ourselves with “free time,” we rush to fill it with the next task on our list. Do we make time to spend in prayer with God? Jesus would take time out of the healings, the teachings, and the massive crowds and would spend time praying with God. What do we have planned today? What is more important than prayer? RESPONSE: Lord, I struggle finding time to spend with…
