The Reluctant Follower, Day 14

Who should determine what is right and what is wrong? Read Jonah 4:1.

We have rules and laws that are set in place in order to help determine what is considered right and what is considered wrong. We see laws from the Bible as well as God was seeking to help people have a standard measure of what we see as right and wrong. However, the issue becomes when we start to think that we made the list of what is right, or that we can alter or adjust what is right. Or, even when we don’t think that God has the right to determine what is right and what is wrong.

The last verse of chapter 3 says that God relented and forgave the people of Nineveh. Jonah didn’t think that was right. He thought God’s compassion and mercy was wrong. Jonah felt that God was wrong. Since Jonah felt that God was wrong, Jonah got angry.

How often do we look at circumstances and think that we know better than God. Or that we don’t agree with what god chose to allow in a situation. In those situations, we are just like Jonah, think that we know better than God. When we start to second guess God or assume that we know more than God, we will get angry when God doesn’t do what we expect or what we thought. We will start to think that we hold the definition of what is right, instead of God being the one who defines right and wrong.

How do we determine what is right and what is wrong? Are we willing to allow God to make that decision in every circumstances, knowing that he may not make the decision that we expect or that we want? God is ultimately the source of truth and right. Our job is to align our thoughts with his, not the other way around.
